You!
Sign up for National Family Game Night–Unplug Your Kids, Connect Your Family on Oct. 16

It’s time for a little truth this Tuesday morning. My family is way too connected…

To our electronics, that is.

As much as I’d like to point the finger at my DD16 and DD12, her father and I are just as bad when it comes to being attached to our phone or computer. For me, it’s harder to break away because I use the computer daily to make my living as a freelancer and blogger.

I try to keep a healthy distance from the digital world while the family is home, but it isn’t easy. During dinner time, we have no phones, etc. out at the table, but the rule gets broken once in a while. When we go out to eat, the rules seem to get even more lax.

Our lives are busy and I know that even when the family is together, we need to do better at actually “being together” and not focused on what’s happening on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or even playing one last round of 2048 (what?? I’m hooked, what can I say?)

A few weeks ago, when I went to the Bloggy Moms Conference, a representative from Carrom, a company that makes board games for the family to enjoy together, asked us to share our thoughts about taking one day and unplugging our kids from the grid, so to speak.

Family Game Night is October 16, 2014
Family Game Night is October 16, 2014

To help families enjoy more quality time, Carrom designated October 16 as National Family Game Night where you can “Unplug Your Kids and Connect Your Family.”

The idea came from Norman Rosen, Chairman of the Board of Carrom Company. One night, he sat in a restaurant and noticed how many families sat at the same table, but weren’t talking with one another because they were too busy on their smartphones or other device.

While at the Bloggy Moms Conference, I had a chance to watch a video about this national movement. Take a look:

I’m asking any parent reading this to join my family in participating in National Family Game Night. We all have board games somewhere around the house. I admit I have a shelf full in my basement that I really should bring to the main floor so we play more often.

Share your pledge and agree to unplug for the day at Carrom’s Facebook Page. Even if you can’t do it on Thursday, because I know weeknights tend to be crazy, sign up and make a commitment to take one day this weekend to unplug and connect with the family.

Also, in honor of Family Game Night, Carrom is offering a 10% off coupon off an entire order on their website to help families add new games to their collection. Just use the code: UNPLUG when you get to the checkout page. I do not make any money off of sales from this link or post, by the way. For me, this isn’t about money; it’s about investing more and/or better time with my entire family.

I’d love it if you’d leave a comment to let me know when your family will unplug and what you plan to do. And, once you do it, drop me an email at marierossiter@gmail.com to share your experiences!
